At Harbor Industries, Inc. we’re changing the way we design, manufacture and deliver displays and fixtures, to reduce – and someday eliminate - their impact on the planet. We will do this in partnership with our employees, our communities, and our customers. We’re doing this for just one reason: because it’s the right thing to do.
Early 2006, we committed to improving the health of our planet. We created a cross-functional “Green Team” to research and implement changes in our procedures and processes, to positively impact our communities, our environment and our share holders. We’re increasing our recycling and energy conservation and our use of environmentally friendly materials. We’re educating our employees on environmental issues and we’re exploring ways to implement sustainable design.
Like everyone else who has concern for the health of our planet, we have a long way to go. But, we are both proud and surprised by what we have accomplished in such a short time.
- We started by replacing the Metal Halide light fixtures in our manufacturing
facility (less than 3 years old) with florescent fixtures. We’re
saving 973,026 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually (49.7% reduction)
enough to power 100 homes.
- We designed a recycling program to turn manufacturing waste into technical
nutrients. In one year, we’ve diverted 300,000 pounds of waste
from the landfill to the recycling center.
- Installing variable speed blowers on all our wood conversion equipment.
- Switched out air compressors in our Grand Haven facility to reduce
energy use.
- Added rain sensors to sprinkler heads to reduce water usage.
- Changed fertilizer compounds to sustainable organic compounds.
- Began an employee education program to help bring awareness into
the home and the community.
- Continue to do research and identify environmentally friendly manufacturing
materials.
And we’re far from done. Some people may think that changing the world is impossible. But we’re Harbor Industries, and anything’s possible here.
